“Giant Water Lilies” appear at Shuangxi Park
If you feel like seeing some giant water lilies, you don’t have to go all the way to Taoyuan’s Guanyin or Tainan’s Baihe anymore. Now you can see some on your way to Yangmingshan or National Palace Museum. Starting July 22nd, the Parks and Street Lights Office of Taipei City’s Public Works Department built a concrete pond at Shuangxi Park, and planted 25 “Giant water lilies” (also known as Santa Cruz water lily; scientific name: Victoria cruziana Orb) in the pond. Making full use of the muck dredged out of ditches by the Department of Environmental Protection, the Office staff carried out periodic fertilization, removed fallen leaves and prevented the fishes and turtles from damaging the water lilies’ leaves. They also trimmed off the damaged leaves caused by 2 typhoons. Now, the lilies have already grown to over 102 centimeters in diameter, and their beautiful flowers are in bloom. In this cool autumn, the Office cordially invites you to visit Shuangxi Park and admire the beautiful giant water lilies against the uniqueness of the Jiangnan style garden.
