Daan Park

Daan Park which belongs to the Daan District is surrounded by Jianguo S. Road on the east, Xinsheng S. Road on the west, Heping E. road on the south and Xinyi Road on the north. The park which covers a total of 259,293 square meters in area is Taipei’s largest park and is nearest the core of the city. Construction of the park began in 1985 in response to ever-increasing urban development. The park was finally completed and opened to the public on March 29, 1994.

While first entering the park, one will notice the park is enclosed by tall, flourishing trees, orderly shrubs were arranged at the edges of the sidewalks, and the entrance plazas were decorated by bright, attractive flowers At the main entrance plaza located at the corner of Xinyi Road and Xinsheng S. Road), flowers and other plants were densely planted and arranged around a large statue of the Buddhist Guanyin. There is a bamboo zone next to the south of the statue. The small zone contains a wide variety of bamboo species including Bambusa verntricosa, green bamboo, Bambusa vulgaris var. striata, Phyllostachys makinoi, and Tetragonocalamus guadrang.

Near the northwest entrance of the park is an artificial pond that covers an area of 0.7 hectares. Around the pond and the small island in the center of the pond, a large number of plants including Duranta repens, Acalypha hispidia, Canna spp., Allamanda cathartica and Ficus pumila were planted. There are also several graceful white geese and many colorful carps living in the pond. All attract many tourists to stay and watch for a long time when they come near the pond.

In the center of the park is a spacious amphitheatre, which can be used as a place to hold outdoor music or theatrical performances. The amphitheatre is surrounded with fragrant flower plants including magnolia, cape-jasmine, Aglaia odorata, Michelia figo and Osmanthus fragrans. These fragrant flowers attract birds and butterflies all the time throughout the year. The amphitheatre is handicapped-accessible for the convenience of handicapped citizens.

To the southeast side of the park near Jianguo S. Road, many species of palm trees were planted in order to give the feelings of walking through a tropical coconut forest.

Inside the park, two main park roads cross the park from east to west, and one main park road runs through the park from south to north. There are 12 pavilions within the park, the larger ones containing rest facilities, public telephones and drinking fountains. All of 6 public rest rooms in the park contain handicapped-accessible facilities, diaper changing tables, etc.

Daan Forest Park has a lot of users every day particularly in the early morning and at sunset. Nearby residents come here for exercises including basketball, dancing, roller-skating, Taiji, or just taking a leisurely stroll. At the northeast corner is a children’s playground containing swings, jungle gyms and other children’s playground equipment. An underground parking lot with a capacity of 1,452 cars is located beneath the park.
